A System for Creating What Cannot Be Standardized

Architecture must respond to individuals, places and purposes. Meaningful design cannot come from a fixed visual formula. At the same time, a professional studio cannot depend entirely on intuition, memory or the presence of one designer. The Landmarks system addresses this tension: our process is systematic, but our architecture is personal.

What We Mean by a Design System

Our design system is not a fixed style and it does not tell every project how it should look. It defines the questions we must ask, the information we must understand, the standards we must protect and the stages through which an idea becomes a coherent architectural direction. The purpose of the system is consistency in the quality of thinking – not sameness in the appearance of projects.

The Two Forces We Bring Together

SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE

Function, circulation and precision

From Process, we carry a rigorous understanding of space planning, circulation, hierarchy and the practical needs of larger and smaller projects.

PERSONAL IDENTITY

Freedom, form and meaning

From collaboration with Alfio Mongelli, we carry the freedom to think sculpturally and the responsibility to let each project express the identity of the client behind it.

The combination of these forces is central to our definition of architecture:

space that works with precision, and form that carries personal meaning.

Eight Landmarks Principles

Understand Before Designing

We begin with people, purpose, place, constraints and ambition - not with a predetermined form.

Function Creates the Foundation

Circulation, spatial relationships and real patterns of use establish the intelligence of the project.

Identity Creates Direction

The project should express something specific about the person, organization or culture behind it.

Form Carries Meaning

Massing, proportion, openings and materials should grow from purpose and identity, not visual fashion alone.

Visualization Improves Decisions

Images and animations allow ideas to be evaluated and refined before expensive construction decisions.

Dialogue Refines Architecture

Structured client feedback is part of personalization, not an interruption to design.

Knowledge Must Be Shared

A lesson from one project should strengthen the whole organization rather than remain with one individual.

ystems Should Protect Creativity

Clear roles, standards and workflows reduce confusion and create more space for meaningful creative work.

Our Design Process

Discover

Understand the client, users, site, context, constraints and ambition.

Define

Create the project brief, priorities and central design story.

Plan

Develop circulation, spatial hierarchy and functional relationships.

Shape

Translate identity and planning into massing, materials and atmosphere.

Visualize

Make the project visible through images, floor plans or animation.

Review

Evaluate the design against the brief and Landmarks principles.

Refine

Use structured feedback to improve clarity and personalization.

Document Learning

Add lessons, standards and references to the shared system.

What the Client Gains

  • A project shaped around real needs rather than a generic formula.
  • A clear relationship between function, identity and architectural form.
  • Visual material for making better decisions before construction.
  • A defined process, feedback structure and scope.
  • Greater confidence when moving into technical development.

Personalization should not depend on one designer's personality

It should be protected by the questions, values and standards of the entire organization.
